The book is truly relevant and full of truth, especially for this time of my life in college. It has challenged me to think about things I have pushed to the back of my head because I was afraid of my future. Being a college student, I did not realize how thinking about the end goal is so important. One of the first journals helped me realize my morals and who I am. That was honestly so refreshing to write about why I am making the choices in my life. In college it is so easy to stir away from being true to yourself. I can honestly say this book have brought meaning to my life and future career. I enjoyed how the journal topics helped me understand what I want out of life.
Before reading the book, I had a general idea of what I wanted my future to look like, but it wasn’t something I thought about often. When I did consider what my life would look like in 5 or 10 years, I would immediately feel anxious. Throughout the first few weeks, we discussed our values, and how they relate to our goals and prospective futures. Values are something that is we all have them, yet we rarely discuss them openly. I feel as though discussing my values with others made them concrete and provided me with a list of factors that would affect my job choice. The book also talks about a “successful” job, and how success has a different definition to every individual. This chapter helped me to form my own definition of success based on my values and goals. With a tangible list of values, and goals, and my personalized definition of success, I have been able to reevaluate my future plans. I am now able to envision myself in 5 years, and know what I need to do in order to get into graduate school. I can think about my future without an overwhelming sense of anxiety or pressure. I used to be anxious about the uncertainty of my future, now I use that energy as motivation to be my best self, and take advantage of every opportunity that will lead me to where I want to be in life.”
After reading the book, I have started to view my everyday decisions and activities differently. This book has been an amazing tool for that has helped me find purpose in life. I always knew my goals, but not how to reach them. High school or college students will enjoy the book because it is engaging, short and to the point. I appreciated the activities because I am a hands – on learner. It is the first class and textbook that I have actually been able to fully apply to my whole life. Think about how many books students have to read that will never actually help them in the real world. This textbook is the exact opposite and helps you discover important information about yourself. Each chapter and activity plays a key role in helping you understand what you want to do with your life. I have learned how to approach my future in a way that has helped with my anxiety, nerves, and self - esteem.
